These include assistant secretary, assistant treasurer, treasurer, auction and raffle ticket sales manager, and club delegate to the SAPC. He is now entering exhibits at Congress, as well as regularly putting on displays at club meetings. He is always prepared to pick up members and take them to auctions or other club meetings. Ron is a friendly, enthusiastic, and committed club member.
2023 - Lorraine O'Brien
Lorraine O’Brien and her husband, Ron, joined City of Noarlunga Philatelic Society on 16 January 2014. In 2015, Lorraine became our minute Secretary and since 2016 has filled the role of Secretary. Lorraine has held various key roles, including SAPC delegate, events coordinator, development and organisation of the club’s programme/syllabus and its execution, which encompasses organising club visits to Noarlunga as well as visiting other clubs in SA. She often steps in to fill a presentation vacancy at very short notice!
Lorraine generously supports our meetings, preserves club history, and actively promotes the club in the community. She has attended the SAPC workshops to learn about exhibiting and taken the next step to enter Congress for the Club competition. She also plays a vital role in recognizing lifetime members, contributes to newsletters, and played a significant role in a successful membership drive in 2022.
As our diligent secretary, she excels under pressure, fosters a welcoming atmosphere, and excels in facilitating meetings and social events. Her trustworthiness and tech-savvy nature keep our members informed by sharing philatelic information, and her excellent filing system and maintenance of our historical archive is outstanding.
Beyond her secretarial role, Lorraine contributes immensely to our club’s well-being. She goes the extra mile by regularly reaching out to members, organizing thoughtful gestures during the COVID lock-down, and preparing for special occasion, such as Easter and Christmas. Lorraine’s dedication to the club, its members, and the broader community is truly deserving of the honour of receiving the Butler Award.
2022 - Paul Bennison
Paul joined the Para Hills Philatelic Society some 35 years ago attending meetings with his daughters Natalie and Pauline.
Paul is also a musician and member of the local town band. It is no surprise that his philatelic pursuits relate to music and famous composers and songs. Para Hills PS is the only local philatelic society Paul belongs to, but he is also a member of several world-wide philatelic societies specialising in the music theme.
For many of his 35 years of membership, Paul has served on the committee of the society in several roles. A general committee member for 1990 and 1991 and continuously from 2008 to date. He was the society’s treasurer from 2011 to 2015 and then secretary from 2016 to the present date.
Paul has introduced to the members of the society a wide ranging knowledge of music, composers, operas, classics, and even Christmas Carols, and we believe he has also introduced philately to his local band members.
2021 - Frank Chester
Frank was a foundation member of the Reynella Philatelic Society, when they formed in 1987, and served as Secretary for many of those years up until 1993. Work and travel meant that philately was put on hold until October 2008 when he returned to The City of Noarlunga PS (formerly Reynella), where he became a committee member.
In 2013, Frank assisted Colleen Martin with the circuit books, after the passing of her husband, until another club member took over the role. In 2016 he became the club’s Treasurer and is still holding that position, giving an in depth update on the finances each meeting.
City of Noarlunga meets twice a month and Frank is there to prepare the hall for set up, putting up tables, chairs and frames, as well as providing supper. (pre covid). His wealth of knowledge and philatelic interests are a boon to the members of the club. He regularly puts on displays at his club as well as visiting other clubs.
Frank is one of the many local clubs unsung heroes that the Harry Butler Award was provided for.
2020 - Phil Scott
Phil has been a member of Community since he joined as a junior in the 1960’s. He has been a committee member continuously since 1975. Over the earlier years of the society many exhibitions and club displays were held at Colonnades, Marion and Arndale shopping centres, and Phil’s attendance and support ensured the success of these events.
Also, Phil has been involved in the organizing of many bus trips, interclub visits undertaken during the period of 70’s to 2000.In 1977 he was involved in the raising of funds for the purchase of the property alongside Toc H Hall. With the sale of the properties over the years, the entire philatelic community in South Australia have all benefited from the refurbishment of SAPHIL House.
Phil is well known in philatelic circles, and volunteers at the CBO twice a week. He is a life member at Community, and his exacting standards have made him a very reliable worker, especially when dealing with circuit books, who has earned the respect of all who talk to him.
2019 - Jen Mibus
Jennifer started in philately when she attended the SAPC Junior Stamp Club in 1988, when Mike Munzer co-ordinated the club. She joined PSSA as a junior in 1993 when she attained the required age to join.
During John Bell’s Presidency, Jen was co-opted onto the Philatelic Society of South Australia committee, and not long after that she became the club’s delegate. Jen is currently on the management committee, she also became membership secretary under Les Csongi in 2014. Jen is also a SAPC delegate representing PSSA at their quarterly meetings. She has exhibited at many State Congresses, display’s at PSSA as well at other clubs as well.

Peter has been a willing member when displays are needed at all clubs. Peter has been involved in the running of auctions, when the SAPC have hosted Congress.
Peter, along with Mike Kovaleff and John Walker are very heavily involved in organising the postal auctions held at SAPHIL House. Peter is again one our philatelic stalwarts, they remain in the background, but the work he does is very much appreciated by all in the philatelic community.
2017 - Michael van der Linden
Michael joined the Mount Gambier Philatelic Society in 1982. He has served as secretary for several years beginning in 1984 then again from 2013. Michael is a diligent and studious secretary recording and printing minutes and agendas, organising interclub events, club programmes, Christmas dinner venues, and designing and producing commemorative covers.
Michael in his role as secretary has been part of our policy to promote philately in our community. Our society has always held a stamp show in our local library with displays to promote local interest and invite interested people to come to our society. We have gained several new members from these information days.
Michael has developed skills in designing and producing commemorative covers for special occasions. Michael was involved in producing a cover for our Arthur Bergen weekend with members of the Australian Airmail society. This month our society held a Basil Watson day on 5th March 2017, which was attended by SAPC president Martin Walker and members from other clubs.
Michael designed a commemorative cover and postcard to commemorate 100 years since Basil Watson flew from Mt. Gambier to Melbourne. Michael also ordered special P stamps for both Basil Watson and James Morrison covers and postcards.
Michael produced two special framed covers, one to Carol Winter and the other to James Morrison. Michael also highlighted his skills in woodwork and turning by producing a fantastic special trophy propellor, which was presented to James Morrison for carrying Michael and the covers at no cost to our society.
2016 - Steve List
Steven has been a member of the Society for about 35 years. For about 30 of those years he has held the post of “auction superintendent”, a non-committee role. At every meeting this involves accepting the auction lots and giving them a unique identification, then during the auction “pencilling” on our vendors’ auction forms. This is a considerable task as at most ordinary meetings there are up to ten vendors and 200 or more auction lots.
At our twice-yearly Monster Auctions we generally receive 500 or more lots, whilst at Stamp Fairs that number can exceed 600 in each of two auctions. For the normal club auctions, Steven has to add up the total sales on all the vendor’s forms, deduct commission, and arrive at the total payment due to each vendor. The importance of this role lies in the fact that his figures form the sole basis for payouts. Any mistake could lead to upset vendors or club books not balancing. Amazingly his figures are virtually 100% right.
It follows that Steven has to be early at every meeting, and be one of the last to leave. Because he doesn’t drive he is reliant on others to bring him, yet he has missed very few meetings over 30 years.
2015 - Joy Lower
Joy has been a keen member of the Frama Group since its inception in 1990. In 2004 the future of the group looked uncertain upon the sudden demise of Ted Barnes. Joy and a small but dedicated band of volunteers formed a new committee. She was appointed Secretary and still occupied that position today until the club closed.
Until about 2012 club meetings were held at Tony Phillip’s residence. Due to Tony’s sudden hospitalisation, this was no longer possible, and Joy graciously offered the use of her house for monthly meetings. She also prepares a light supper for those members who are able to attend and has continued the tradition of serving ham and scrambled eggs at the Group’s Christmas AGM.
As part of her duties, Joy maintains minutes of the meetings and posts the newsletters to the members worldwide from Norway to USA and China to New Zealand! She is the voice that members Australia-wide hear when they contact the group by telephone.

In July 1992, he was elected as Vice President and Secretary, positions he held until June 1995, when he was elected President. He stepped down from this position in June 1999 for personal reasons and took the role of Vice President until June 2016. He resumed as President in June 2016 and continues to fill that role. He is also our club delegate to the SAPC, a position he has held for the last five years.
Jeff has been a keen volunteer in the Circuit Book Office for 10 years, and his untiring efforts have helped to keep this important function running smoothly. He became a member of Eastern Districts, Glenside, and Stirling Clubs in recent years, and his assistance and willingness to help run these clubs has been of immense value. Jeff volunteers at Congress whenever the opportunity arises, whether it be in setting up, catering, or general handyman, and he always undertakes these tasks in a very cheerful and friendly manner.
Jeff has proven to be the perfect club man; one who is prepared to get his ‘hands dirty’ for the betterment of the clubs and philately.

2021 - Geoff Edwards
Geoff developed his interest in philately in the late 1950’s as a junior member of the Community Philatelic Society which met in the TocH Hall in Edwardstown. Through his secondary and tertiary education Geoff maintained interest in his stamp collections but was not involved in organised philately. In 1970 Geoff was appointed secondary science teacher at the Port Broughton Area School. He immediately joined the newly-formed Snowtown Philatelic Society as a foundation member. He quickly assumed the position of secretary, a position he held until the passing of Snowtown’s inaugural president, Mr Arnold Keller. Geoff then became president, a position he held until the mid 1990’s. He was vice-president when the Snowtown Philatelic Society folded in 1998.
Geoff was a foundation member of the Moonta Philatelic Society and maintained his membership until that society folded. He did serve that society as a committee person. The Snowtown and Moonta societies ran concurrently. Geoff also joined the Southern Districts Philatelic Society in the final 4 years of its existence. He was a committee person in that society’s final year.
Following the closure of the Snowtown PS Geoff joined the Port Pirie PS at the beginning of 1999. In December 2005 Geoff was elected president and has served in that position to the present day. It is to be noted that the Port Pirie PS was established in 1933 and is the second oldest philatelic society in South Australia behind the Philatelic Society of South Australia. It has a rich history.
Geoff has lived continuously in Port Broughton since 1970 which meant a significant travel commitment to be involved in the above 4 philatelic societies. Most of the travel was at night, some of which was on unsealed roads which had its inherent dangers.
In the late 1970’s Geoff conducted an organised stamp club for students of the Port Broughton Area School. Meetings were held in the lunch hour on a regular basis. This arrangement was not part of the school curriculum but involved both Geoff and the students giving of their own time. This ran for some 5 years.
Under the leadership of Arnold Keller of the Snowtown PS a small group of members, including Geoff, organised annual exchange visits to both the Port Augusta and Peterborough philatelic societies. The group would take displays and auction lot material to those meetings and would assist their members with issues/queries they had relating to their philatelic pursuits. These visits were not reciprocated. They continued for 3 years when those societies folded.

Due to personal reasons, Andy had a break from being involved with philately for about 20 years, when he joined Salisbury in 2015. Earlier this year Andy became Salisbury’s Perforated Points editor, as well as joining the committee as Assistant Secretary.
Even though not directly involved in philately, Andy has not let his talents go to waste as he has been a vital member to 8 different clubs by serving as their auditor:- Elizabeth, Salisbury, The Australian Postcard Society, Barossa, Philatelic Society of South Australia, Printed Collectibles, Airmails , and lastly the South Australian Philatelic Council.

National Awards
The Australian Philatelic Federation (APF) conducts a formal system of Awards which aim to recognise and honour philatelists and others who have made a significant contribution to the development and promotion of philately in Australia. The APF’s Award system comprises two main components – the Australian Philatelic Order Awards (including the Research Award) and the APF Services to Philately Award (at the National Level) or SPAN.
It is the responsibility of the South Australian Philatelic Council to nominate candidates for APF Awards from the membership of clubs and societies within South Australia and the Northern Territory. Listed, below, are the South Australian recipients of these awards. The full list can be accessed by clicking on the APO and Span Honours Board bars.
